Awning and casement windows are popular window designs for homeowners due to their ease of operation. Moreover, they are highly energy-efficient and an excellent source of fresh air. However, like any household item, they can break from too much wear and tear. Following are some simple steps on how to fix a broken window crank handle.

  • Window Keeps Sticking

Use These Steps to Repair a Stuck Window:

  • Unscrew the window hinge. Remove the window.
  • Shave a few mm. off the edge that keeps sticking.

*Take care not to shave off excess, as this will leave a gap, which can cause drafting issues.

  • Ensuring that all the window hinges are secure and tightly fastened, replace the window.
  • Window Crank Is Broken

If the window no longer locks due to the fact that the crank is not secure, this could be a stripped gear and will require a new window crank. Use these steps once the new crank is purchased:

  1. Disconnect and remove the handle from the window track.
  2. Remove the screw that held it in place
  3. Crank the window open until the track notch and plastic guide are flush.
  4. Unsecure the mounting screws from the window trim inside the track.
  5. Gently glide a putty knife between the casement cover and window dray and carefully pry it out.
  6. Using the directions on the package of the new handle, install it
  • Window Does Not Fully Open
