What is a vinyl patio door?

A vinyl patio door is a sliding door system with two or more glass panels set inside a uPVC frame. One panel slides on a track while the other stays fixed, so the unit opens to one side without using up floor space inside the room. Vinyl won’t warp, peel or rust like wood or metal, which makes it a popular choice for homeowners who want a low maintenance entry to a deck or backyard patio.

Key system features

Our vinyl sliding patio doors share the same core hardware in every size, from a 5-foot bedroom slider to a 12-foot great-room opening. The build list is short, but every part earns its spot.

4⅞” mechanically fastened vinyl frame for solid structural support

Double perimeter seals for tight air control through summer and winter

Stainless steel roller track that resists rust, salt and pitting

Adjustable nylon tandem ball-bearing rollers for a smooth, quiet glide

Snap-in components, so future repairs are quick and clean

Single or multi-point Total Seal lock options for added security

Performance and energy efficiency

Heat loss through a sliding door can drive up hydro bills fast. Each of our vinyl patio frames holds a 1″ sealed unit with low e glass, argon gas fill and Super Spacer® Technology. The room stays cool in summer and warm in winter, with no frost on the inside pane.

Steel reinforcement runs through the vinyl frame so the door holds up to high wind loads off the lake. The double perimeter seal cuts air leaks at the meeting rail, which is where most sliders fail. Select glass packages are ENERGY STAR™ certified across all Ontario climate zones, so you get year round comfort and real energy savings on every utility bill.

TotalSeal™ Technology

Glass options for vinyl sliding patio doors

Glass makes up most of a sliding patio door, so the right pack matters more than the frame colour. We build sealed units to match how the door faces the sun and what the room is used for.

Double or triple glazed sealed units for higher insulation

Tinted glass for solar control on south-facing walls

Tempered glass for safety near play areas, pools and stairs

Low e glass with argon gas fill for the best glass per dollar

Frosted or privacy patterns for side yards close to a neighbour’s fence

Between-the-glass mini blinds for easy cleaning and a tidy look

The right combination cuts heat gain in summer, blocks heat loss in winter and still lets in plenty of natural light.

Sizes and configurations

Standard sizes for a vinyl patio door run from 5 to 12 feet wide and 80 inches tall. Older Toronto homes rarely match a chart, so we build to the exact rough opening.

2-Panel Sliding Patio Doors

2-panel slider – most homeowners’ pick

3 Panel Sliding Patio Doors

3-panel sliders with one fixed panel and two operating panels

4-panel stacking units for very wide openings, paired with full-screen access

French-style swing doors built on a vinyl frame

3 panel bifold patio doors

Bi-fold panels that fold to one side for full open access

Side-light panels for matching glass on either side of the unit

For the swing version, see our garden door styles. For folding panels, browse our bifold patio doors range or look at our stacking patio doors for very wide walls.

Style, colour and interior design

Your patio door is one of the largest features in any room, so it shapes the look of the whole interior. We finish vinyl frames in white, black, sandstone and several wood-look laminates. Hardware comes in satin nickel, brushed black or matte white. Built-in mini blinds sit between the glass, so there are no cords to dust and no fabric for pets to chew.

A slim vinyl profile keeps sight lines clean and gives high visibility from inside the house, even on cloudy days. Tinted glass holds privacy on side yards without blocking light. The result is a perfect patio door that fits modern, classic and country interior design.

Security, safety and screens

A patio door is a common entry point during a break-in, so we treat security as a core feature, not an upgrade. Every door ships with a multi-point lock and a foot-bolt that drops into the track. Tempered glass on the lower panel cuts injury risk if the glass breaks. Steel reinforcement inside the vinyl frame stops the unit from flexing under impact.

Full-height retractable screens are standard on every operating panel. The mesh keeps bugs out while still letting fresh air through, and the screen rolls back into the side jamb when you don’t need it.

Materials and manufacturing process

Our vinyl is virgin uPVC sourced from Vision Extrusions, run through Pro-Line vinyl machinery in our 60,000 sq ft Toronto plant. The sealed units use Cardinal Glass with Super Spacer® warm-edge spacers. Locks come from Roto. The high quality materials and a fully automated manufacturing process let us exceed industry standards on tolerance, square and seal pressure.

We make about 17,000 windows and doors a year, which keeps lead times short and pricing fair. The whole process, from quote to install, runs 4 to 6 weeks. Rush orders ship in 1 to 2 weeks for smaller projects.

As Seen and Heard on

Installation across the GTA

Total Home Windows and Doors is a manufacturer plus contractor, so the same crew that builds your door also installs it. Each install follows the same simple steps, so the room is back in service the same day.

Remove the old door and dispose of the frame, glass and trim

Check the rough opening for rot, racking and frame damage

Set the new door level and plumb on shims

Foam, flash and caulk the full perimeter

Trim the interior to match the existing wall

Test the lock, roller glide and weatherstripping with you on site

We’ve installed in over 28,000 homes across Central and South Ontario since 2007.

What homeowners say

Our reviews come from real installs in Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan and across the GTA. Customers point to the same three things again and again: the price held from quote to install, the crew cleaned up before they left, and the slider glides with one finger years later. We are so pleased that we went with Total Home for our new door. Eugene was very knowledgeable and helped us get the door we always wanted. He was available for any follow-up questions and made us feel taken care of as customers. Nazar did a FANTASTIC job installing and we are so happy with the final product. No complaints from beginning to end (a rarity with home renovations)!

I honestly don’t know where to start—everything about this experience was outstanding. From the very beginning, Vitally impressed me with his professionalism. He walked me through the entire process, gave me a tour of the factory with a wide selection of samples, and offered the best price I found on the market. Within just five weeks, the windows were fully installed. The quality of the windows and materials is excellent, and the installation was flawless. Vlad and his team arrived early, worked efficiently, and paid attention to every detail. They were polite, respectful, and took the time to clean up thoroughly after the job was done. I also appreciated how patient they were with all my questions throughout the process. The finishing and air sealing are top-notch. I’m extremely satisfied with the results and highly recommend Vitally, Vlad, and their entire team. This has been one of the best service experiences I’ve had.

Fantastic! These installers were unbelievably fast and efficient. I was expecting to need to do touch-ups on the trim etc afterwards, but they left everything looking pristine. I literally just had to re-hang curtains and that was it. Eugene walked me through a potentially confusing rebate process, and kept in touch even when he was on vacation (sorry about that Eugene!). I happily recommend them for window installation, quality of product, and customer service 🙂

We recently had new windows installed by Total Home Windows and Doors, and the entire experience was excellent from start to finish. A big thank you to our project manager, Eugene, who guided us through everything—design options, product selection, and government loan process. He made what could have been a complicated process feel simple and stress-free. His professionalism and support were outstanding. We’re also very happy with the quality of the windows and especially the installation, which was completed by lad Val and his crew. They were truly amazing—friendly, professional, efficient, and very, very clean. They treated our home with great care, and it shows in the final result. We’d also like to thank the office staff at Total Home for always being friendly and helpful throughout the process. Everyone we dealt with made us feel like valued customers. We highly recommend Total Home to anyone looking for windows or doors—and if you can, ask for Eugene. He’s the best. Thank you again to the whole team!

Fourth wonderful experience with Total Home Windows and Doors! This time we had a custom sized patio door installed and we are thrilled. Our sunroom screen door (old and shabby) wasn’t closing properly. And Eugene (our amazing sales rep) suggested replacing it with a sliding door. Something we never considered and it was the perfect solution! We were so happy that Nazar did the install. He was over last year installing windows, and did a super job. Nazar and his assistant were clean and meticulous. And super friendly. I wholeheartedly recommend this great company. After the first job, they had me as a customer for life.

The process started with a meeting at our house with Eugene, who was very friendly, very helpful, and eager to earn our business. Their pricing was incredibly fair, and we ended up choosing Total Home to replace the windows on our entire house. When the date came for the work to finally begin, they sent a team of 4 people who worked incredibly efficiently and were able to replace two dozen windows in a single day. They came back one other day to finish the trim and clean up. I was stunned that they did such a great job in such a short amount of time. We are very happy with the result and with the level of professionalism and easy communication thoughout the whole process. Would very highly recommend working with Total Home.

Vitaly and team replaced all of our windows and doors, including install of a new bay window and sliding patio door. The entire experience from showroom selection, support on specifics for door with sidelights, application for greener home credits, and install, detailing, and cleanup were a great, professional experience! The new windows and doors are a huge step up over our previous builder windows, and the three panes (although a bit pricier, though marginally so with the credit) offer amazing sound barriers and have had a noticeably positive impact to heating and cooling bills. We’d highly recommend total home windows and doors for your projects!

Just a smooth transaction from start to finish. But what really stood out, was the level of quality and professionalism from the Installers. These guys worked so well as a team and it was a pleasure having them in my home. The install was quick and efficient with no hiccups. They were very detailed and there was almost zero dust or mess when they were done which was a huge surprise with how much work is actually needed for install. And most of all, they were very polite, had a great attitude, and I hope they let me know when they are in the area so I can make them espresso(s) haha

Just had 11 windows and two doors replaced by Total Home Windows and Doors. I requested a consult in February and met with Vitaly, who was very knowledgeable and gave us all the information we needed to make an informed decision. Communication was easy and we were able to tour the factory to select a door. Vitaly went over the various options and answered all of our many questions professionally. Once we signed the contract, it took about 5-6 weeks until installation. The installers arrived promptly on the set date and took care to protect our floors and ensure our furniture was out of harms way. Eugene, Said and the rest of the installation team were respectful and efficient. The job was finished in two days and the team thoroughly cleaned up afterwards. The windows are great quality and I can already feel a difference in my home. I would highly recommend this company if you are shopping around - they care about what they do and it shows in their work.

After requesting several quotes from various contractors to retrofit my parent's home with new windows and doors including insulation top-up and sill replacement, Total Home, was selected based on my interactions with Mike B. He was friendly and professional who provided me with a detailed and reasonable quote for the project that was within my parent’s budget. He was in constant contact with me throughout the job. The Total Home team were amazing with installation of the insulation, window sill, windows and doors and went above and beyond expectations in many cases . As an example, the insulation technician (Farook) noticed that the bathroom fan vents were not properly vented through the roof and corrected the issue for me. The windows and doors crew, led by Eugene / Said, were professional and courteous who did an awesome job working in the brutal cold without complaints. I couldn't be much happier with the project and would have no reservations about recommending Total Home for your project.

We are thrilled with our experience with Total Home Windows and Doors - from start to finish! We have a very unique situation with our front door: it looks like a double door entry from the outside, but 2/3 of the second door has a closet behind it. We had multiple businesses come to quote, but Alex at Total Home Windows and Doors was the only one who could show us exactly what kind of custom solution they could offer, and at the best price! Communication was excellent with the company during the buying and measuring process, and today Nazar came for our custom install. They were very friendly, knowledgeable, and respectful of our home while making fast work of getting our new door and sidelight installed. Sharing photos of before, during, and after to see the unique situation. We are thrilled and would 100% recommend this business for your door needs.

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions our quote team hears most often during in-home visits across the GTA. If yours isn’t here, give us a call and we’ll walk through it on the spot.

Are vinyl patio doors energy efficient?

Yes. With low e glass, argon gas, Super Spacer® Technology and a 1″ sealed unit, our vinyl patio doors meet ENERGY STAR™ certified targets for every Ontario climate zone. The steel-reinforced frame and double perimeter seal cut the air leaks that drive most heat loss on a slider.

Casement windows are hinged on one side (left or right) and open outward using a crank mechanism. The folding handle allows for smooth operation, and windows can open to 90 degrees for maximum ventilation and easy cleaning access.

Yes. We offer between-the-glass mini blinds in white. The blinds sit inside the sealed unit, so they stay clean and don’t tangle with pet paws or kids’ fingers.

For most Toronto homes, a double-pane low e glass unit with argon gas hits the ideal balance of price and performance. South-facing rooms benefit from tinted glass to cut solar heat gain. North-facing rooms can run a clear low e for higher daylight.

Most likely. We measure each opening on site and build the door to match, so older homes with non-standard openings get the same fit as a new build. Standard sizes ship from stock, custom sizes ship in 4 to 6 weeks.

Yes. Vinyl is a poor heat conductor, so the frame holds room temperature far better than aluminum. Pair that with low e glass and argon gas, and the slider handles -30°C nights with no frost on the inside pane.

Yes. The lower panel uses tempered glass, which breaks into small, dull pieces instead of long shards. The roller track sits flush, so it doesn’t catch toes or paws.
