What is a vinyl patio door?

A vinyl patio door is a sliding door system with two or more glass panels set inside a uPVC frame. One panel slides on a track while the other stays fixed, so the unit opens to one side without using up floor space inside the room. Vinyl won’t warp, peel or rust like wood or metal, which makes it a popular choice for homeowners who want a low maintenance entry to a deck or backyard patio.

Performance and energy efficiency

Heat loss through a sliding door can drive up hydro bills fast. Each of our vinyl patio frames holds a 1″ sealed unit with low e glass, argon gas fill and Super Spacer® Technology. The room stays cool in summer and warm in winter, with no frost on the inside pane.

Steel reinforcement runs through the vinyl frame so the door holds up to high wind loads off the lake. The double perimeter seal cuts air leaks at the meeting rail, which is where most sliders fail. Select glass packages are ENERGY STAR™ certified across all Ontario climate zones, so you get year round comfort and real energy savings on every utility bill.

TotalSeal™ Technology

Glass options for vinyl sliding patio doors

Glass makes up most of a sliding patio door, so the right pack matters more than the frame colour. We build sealed units to match how the door faces the sun and what the room is used for.

Double or triple glazed sealed units for higher insulation

Tinted glass for solar control on south-facing walls

Tempered glass for safety near play areas, pools and stairs

Low e glass with argon gas fill for the best glass per dollar

Frosted or privacy patterns for side yards close to a neighbour’s fence

Between-the-glass mini blinds for easy cleaning and a tidy look

The right combination cuts heat gain in summer, blocks heat loss in winter and still lets in plenty of natural light.

Sizes and configurations

Standard sizes for a vinyl patio door run from 5 to 12 feet wide and 80 inches tall. Older Toronto homes rarely match a chart, so we build to the exact rough opening.

2-Panel Sliding Patio Doors

2-panel slider – most homeowners’ pick

3 Panel Sliding Patio Doors

3-panel sliders with one fixed panel and two operating panels

4-panel stacking units for very wide openings, paired with full-screen access

French-style swing doors built on a vinyl frame

3 panel bifold patio doors

Bi-fold panels that fold to one side for full open access

Side-light panels for matching glass on either side of the unit

For the swing version, see our garden door styles. For folding panels, browse our bifold patio doors range or look at our stacking patio doors for very wide walls.

Security, safety and screens

A patio door is a common entry point during a break-in, so we treat security as a core feature, not an upgrade. Every door ships with a multi-point lock and a foot-bolt that drops into the track. Tempered glass on the lower panel cuts injury risk if the glass breaks. Steel reinforcement inside the vinyl frame stops the unit from flexing under impact.

Full-height retractable screens are standard on every operating panel. The mesh keeps bugs out while still letting fresh air through, and the screen rolls back into the side jamb when you don’t need it.

Materials and manufacturing process

Our vinyl is virgin uPVC sourced from Vision Extrusions, run through Pro-Line vinyl machinery in our 60,000 sq ft Toronto plant. The sealed units use Cardinal Glass with Super Spacer® warm-edge spacers. Locks come from Roto. The high quality materials and a fully automated manufacturing process let us exceed industry standards on tolerance, square and seal pressure.

We make about 17,000 windows and doors a year, which keeps lead times short and pricing fair. The whole process, from quote to install, runs 4 to 6 weeks. Rush orders ship in 1 to 2 weeks for smaller projects.

As Seen and Heard on

Installation across the GTA

Total Home Windows and Doors is a manufacturer plus contractor, so the same crew that builds your door also installs it. Each install follows the same simple steps, so the room is back in service the same day.

Remove the old door and dispose of the frame, glass and trim

Check the rough opening for rot, racking and frame damage

Set the new door level and plumb on shims

Foam, flash and caulk the full perimeter

Trim the interior to match the existing wall

Test the lock, roller glide and weatherstripping with you on site

We’ve installed in over 28,000 homes across Central and South Ontario since 2007.

What homeowners say

Our reviews come from real installs in Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan and across the GTA. Customers point to the same three things again and again: the price held from quote to install, the crew cleaned up before they left, and the slider glides with one finger years later. Total Home installed 21 windows, a patio door, and a front door for us, and they did a great job. Vitaly offered a fair price and a high-quality product. The installation headed by Eugene and Said went smooth. Highly recommended.

An easy 5 star review for the Total Home Team. The quote, the timing, the efficiency, the communication, the window installation itself all went as planned. Nazar and the other installer were professional and quick. We only had budgeted for 5 windows and a door cut out and will use them again for the front door and windows, when the pocketbook allows.
We are very happy with our investment and the TH team.

Im very happy with my purchase of 10 windows from this company. The office was helpful in talking me thru my options and troubleshooting some design limitations. While i initially was disappointed that the installer could not provide larger sills on the wooden trim, in the end i am very happy with the updated look these windows give my home - inside and out!
Installers - Valery and Andre- worked consistently and politely thru completion. - an 11 hr and gruellingly hot day. - they left my home spotless. I am very happy with my double hung windows - i hope they last me a lifetime.

We are completely happy with our new exterior door, windows and garage door, as supplied and installed by Total Home.
Our project manager Eugene was excellent from day 1 through completion, explaining everything clearly, always responding same day to questions. He provided us references of other projects in our community - these families were all very happy, years later, with their installations and each said the best part of their experience with Total Home was the top notch service they received. We feel exactly the same. Every aspect of the project (Eugene) and the installations (Nazar) were excellent. We would not hesitate to recommend Total Home, Eugene and Nazar, and in fact we hope to have them back for future work.

Bumped up from 2 stars to 4 stars because of our sales rep Alex who took care of the matter.
_______________________________________________________________
We replaced a total of 7 windows, with one positioned at a height of 16ft. Some windows had marks. The installer told me it wasn't scratches and could be cleaned with a paper towel. However, the mark on the 16ft-high window is too noticeable, and we can't reach it ourselves, requiring high altitude equipment. We don’t mind to clean the other 6 windows by ourselves, but just the one at 16ft high. The installer could clean it in 10 seconds, but now, the 10-second task needs to be done by a cleaning service, which starting at a minimum of $250 for just one 16 ft window!!!!!

Secondly, after all the windows were installed, the installer was doing the final cleaning, clearing the small wood chips and dust on the floor. It's the 21st century, and I don't understand why a professional window company didn't use an industrial vacuum cleaner instead of a broom. The wood debris and dust were only around the windows area, but the installer roughly and quickly swept with the broom, spreading dust throughout the entire house. A considerable amount of dust floated around, and we had to leave the house for several hours before returning to clean. If the installer had used a vacuum cleaner, it wouldn't have generated such a large amount of dust in the entire house.

Finally, we don't mind and already told the installer which washroom that they can use. However, the issue arose after the installer completed their installation and removed the dirty cloth from the floor, but then returned to use washroom with dirty shoes that they had walked into our backyard, carrying a lot of mud on their shoes. With the matter of the case, it should never happened as a professional company.

We did shop around and ended up with three estimates several months ago when contemplating the purchase of new windows. Eugene made the choice to go with Total Home Windows and Doors a very easy one. He guided me through the endless choices with knowledge and patience until we came up with a perfect solution that is not only energy efficient, esthetically very pleasing, but also fell within our budget. Yesterday, Valerii and his amazing crew replaced 5 standard windows, a huge picture window in the living room, the back patio door, as well as our front door and screen door. They were all very courteous and professional. They worked so efficiently and left the house clean and tidy both inside and out. Val took the time to show me how all the different windows mechanisms worked and how easily cleaning them would now be. They did a fantastic job. I couldn't be happier. The house looks amazing! Thanks, guys!!

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions our quote team hears most often during in-home visits across the GTA. If yours isn’t here, give us a call and we’ll walk through it on the spot.

Are vinyl patio doors energy efficient?

Yes. With low e glass, argon gas, Super Spacer® Technology and a 1″ sealed unit, our vinyl patio doors meet ENERGY STAR™ certified targets for every Ontario climate zone. The steel-reinforced frame and double perimeter seal cut the air leaks that drive most heat loss on a slider.

Casement windows are hinged on one side (left or right) and open outward using a crank mechanism. The folding handle allows for smooth operation, and windows can open to 90 degrees for maximum ventilation and easy cleaning access.

Yes. We offer between-the-glass mini blinds in white. The blinds sit inside the sealed unit, so they stay clean and don’t tangle with pet paws or kids’ fingers.

For most Toronto homes, a double-pane low e glass unit with argon gas hits the ideal balance of price and performance. South-facing rooms benefit from tinted glass to cut solar heat gain. North-facing rooms can run a clear low e for higher daylight.

Most likely. We measure each opening on site and build the door to match, so older homes with non-standard openings get the same fit as a new build. Standard sizes ship from stock, custom sizes ship in 4 to 6 weeks.

Yes. Vinyl is a poor heat conductor, so the frame holds room temperature far better than aluminum. Pair that with low e glass and argon gas, and the slider handles -30°C nights with no frost on the inside pane.

Yes. The lower panel uses tempered glass, which breaks into small, dull pieces instead of long shards. The roller track sits flush, so it doesn’t catch toes or paws.
