How to Frame a Window Opening

Have you ever wanted to add a window to your home but were afraid to take on the task yourself? Framing windows is not as difficult as it would seem if you know how to follow instructions.

Of course, it is always best to hire a professional to frame and install your windows Barrie. But, if you have some carpentry experience, this brief guide on how to frame a window can give you a head start.

Basic 5-Step Guide for Framing Windows

The following is a guide for framing and installing a window in an existing wall.

Step 1: Prepare for Window Framing

  • Carefully remove the interior wall covering along with any insulation, therefore, exposing the studs.
  • Figure out which studs need to be replaced before you can frame the windows.
  • Measure the jamb size and height.
  • To preserve the siding, try to retain as much of the existing window frame as you can.
  • Start at the floor and measure upwards, marking the studs as you go. Then, do the same in reverse.
  • On the exposed edge of the faces and studs, use a square to draw a straight line.
  • Cut as straight and carefully as possible with the use of a handsaw.

Step 2: Install the Window Framing

  • Cut 2 jack studs to build the header.
  • Construct the header and lift it into place.
  • Using screws to connect the studs and jacks, square up any remaining pieces.
  • Repeat the process to secure the header at the top of the unit.
  • Cut 2 pieces for the rough sill after carefully measuring between the studs.
  • Place these 2 pieces between the jacks, nailing them together, and then fasten them in place.

Step 3: Cut the Siding for the Exterior

  • After ensuring that the framing is firmly in place, drill a hole in each corner going from the siding to the outside.
  • Cut out the siding using a jigsaw.
  • Measure each hole at the width along the siding, marking it as you proceed.
  • Draw a line on the window frame using a long level to connect all the marks.
  • Fasten a straight board to the siding along these lines. This will serve as a guide when you use the saw blade.
  • Drive the fasteners using a sharp blade. Take care, as these will later be covered by trim molding. Use these holes as a starting point.
  • Make a clean cut by pressing the base plate firmly against the window siding.
  • Repeat this process on the other side, cutting the bottom, top, and side of the window frame.
  • Remove the window siding and install the new jamb.
  • Using the holes in the window siding, measure the width to the side jamb, this will help you find the inside of the new window frame.
  • Draw a line on the outer edge of the frame after you have set the exterior trim molding.
  • Remember to include the width of the blade in your measurement: measure from the baseplate of the saw to the edge of the window plate.
  • Repeat this process from the siding of the trim to the frame center. This will be the point at which you set the fence board.
  • When you set the depth of the saw blade, make sure it will cut through the siding only—you do not want to cut into the window framing.
  • Carefully cut along each side, removing the siding as you go.

Step 4: Install the New Window

  • Take care to ensure that it is properly centered, and set the window firmly in place.
  • Carefully level the sides and top, leaving some room for expanding insulation foam.
  • Nail the flange around the window securely.
  • Add the trim finish and insulation foam.
