Can You Replace Your Own Windows? Tips for Brampton Area Homeowners on Window Replacement

Is it time to replace those older windows in your Brampton area home? Are you trying to cut corners now that the new year is upon us? Can you replace your own windows to save money or is professional installation a must?

Replacing windows in Brampton can be a bit costly once you factor in the number of windows you need to replace, plus the installation costs, and any upgrades. If you are planning to replace your own windows, continue reading for some helpful tips.

Installation Time

Time Frame

Typically, full frame Brampton windows replacement can take as much as six hours per window. And, if you wish to change the window opening or upgrade the window trim, it can take even longer. Not to mention additional time for caulking, painting, or staining. Professional installing will take less than half this time. Another option is to install window inserts, or retrofit windows, which we shall discuss in the next section.

Window Inserts

If you chose to replace the window glass only, or the window insert, this could save you a great deal of time. With retrofit window installation, you do not have to replace the current window trim or interior. You simply replace the glass insert.

However, if you decide to go with this method, you need to keep in mind that not all window openings are able to be fitted for window inserts. The diagonal measurement of the replacement glass must not vary by more than ⅛ of an inch or the windows will not function properly.

Besides, the window frame must still be in good condition. If there is any damage to the frame, you will need to opt for full frame window replacement.

Full Frame

Full frame window replacement is often the preferred choice for homeowners, as it offers more options for styles. Moreover, full frame windows, unlike window inserts, can be custom-made to fit any size or shape of the window opening.

For this method, you will have to remove and replace the window trim as well as the jambs. This is more time-consuming and tedious than simply replacing the insert, but overall, full frame window replacement is more cost-effective as well as more energy-efficient.

If you notice that there is any major damage to your window frames, you may wish to opt for professional window installation. If there is any damage to the existing window frame, it may also mean that there is some structural damage to the walls surrounding the area. A professional window installer will be able to determine the severity of the damage. Full frame installation is always recommended in this scenario.
